פעיל זכויות האדם הו ז'יה (Hu Jia) הורשע באפריל 2008 לשלוש וחצי שנות מאסר בגין "הסתה לחתרנות", מעשה הנראה כמו ניסיון נוסף מצד ממשלת סין להשתיק פעילים סינים המבקרים את מצב זכויות האדם במדינה.

השלטונות מונעים מהו ז'יה קשר עם עורך דינו או בני משפחתו. בנוסף לכך מונעים ממנו טיפול רפואי, הו ז'יה נזקק לטיפול תרופתי יומיומי בשל מחלת כבד שנגרמה מזיהום צהבת B.

אשתו של הו ז'יה, זנג ז'יניאן, נתונה במעצר בית עם התינוקת שלהם שנולדה לפני מספר חודשים. נאסר עליה לעזוב את ביתם וקשרי הטלפון והאינטרנט בביתם נותקו.

Dear sir

I am deeply dismayed that activist Hu Jia has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison solely for his peaceful and legitimate human rights activities.

Despite promises made by Chinese officials, the Olympic Games has failed to act as a catalyst for reform and harassment against activists appears to have intensified. Hu Jia appears to be the latest activist to fall victim of the wave of repression being carried out against peaceful activists in a pre-Olympics “clean-up” and attempt to portray a stable and harmonious image to the world in August 2008.

In the interests of securing a positive human rights legacy of the Games for China, I urge you to release Hu Jia and all other prisoners of conscience including activists and journalists, detained solely for exercising their rights to freedom of expression.
